. the alternative energy market is not going to start working in the next two weeks. the obama economic policies aren't going to be working in the effect two weeks. it wasn't about style. it's about substance and obama not being able to stand on his own record. that record is not going to change between now and the next debate. martha: thank you for being with us today. bill: president obama telling the american people there is one pledge he will always keep. >> four years ago i said i'm not a perfect man and i'm no won't be a perfect president. that's probably a promise governor romney thinks i have kept. you i promised i would fight every single day for the american people and the middle class. i kept that promise. if you will vote for me, then i promise i will fight just as hard in a second term. bill: this won't be long. but give me four minutes. the romney campaign says he was a clear winner on substance. >> mitt romney may have scored some style point during this theatrical debate performance but he failed on the facts and his credibility didn't pass the bar the american people are looking
general assembly week and this particular time we all watched it president obama did come to new york, didn't meet with benjamin netanyahu, talked to him on the phone, refused to allow the prime minister to come to washington even for that meeting. what is your analysis of what happened during general assembly week and what the impact is on us as americans? >> precisely correct. president obama about a week ago came to new york city for the u.n. general assembly. he did meet with world leaders last year decided to meet this year with zero world leaders and jetted off to campaign. he should have met with benjamin netanyahu, he should have met with the president of egypt and talked to him about maintaining security there and keeping americans safe in egypt. the white house response was he has a telephone he can call the leaders. why doesn't he use the telephone to call the view and walked to whoppi goldberg over the phone and take that time and meet with benjamin netanyahu and the president in the middle he's, our embassy is on fire, our president times find for the view but not leaders

obama and a five-point spread in one week in gallup. i know you will have scott rasmussen said in a few minutes. the race is two point advantage for romney, pulled ahead in virginia, and pulled ahead in florida and closed gap significantly in ohio. playing off fence at right time. you have to have a good october to be president. bill: you mentioned three big states. we'll get to that in 10 minutes time. kirsten, what do you think about the mo? is it now in mitt's favor? >> right now it is, yeah but i think you have to bear in mind this could shift again just as quickly if in the next debate president obama does very well. so i don't know that this is something that you should take as being, a permanent shift but it is definitely gotten mitt romney, back in the game i think before it was sort of drifting, the momentum was drifting toward obama. certainly if you looked at the battleground states and now you're seeing there is a battleground poll out today, they're neck-and-neck. so i think, a race is on what i would say. bill: i see. what rasmussen was saying last week. give me sunday mor
-making coming out of the obama camp regarding president obama's debate performance last week that blamed everything from the altitude, to the moderator. over the weekend i saw reports that they were now blaming john kerry for doing a poor job as a stand in for governor romney during their mock debate sessions. look, it wasn't just a bad debate for president obama, it's been a bad four years. he just doesn't have the issues or the facts on his side. we have 23 million americans who are struggling for work, we have 47 million americans of record on food stamps. one in six americans living in poverty. this obama economy has not worked for people and we can't afford another four years like the last four. bill: you know what democrats are saying, they are saying that mitt romney was lying. that's the word they are using. james kleinsberg talked about. others talked about fabricating issues. what does the romney team say about those charges? >> i'll tell you, bill, this is a very petulant and unpresidential response from the obama campaign team. i tell you the big difference in that debate as
much more aggressive president obama, and i think that's what you will see two weeks from now when he shows up at the next debate with romney in new york. >> jim, on the campaign trail, governor romney today more energized? >> absolutely, anderson. we were with him on his campaign plane during the day and as he got on the plane, he was smiling, he was laughing with his campaign staff. there was a spring in his step. there was an air of confidence in this campaign that i haven't seen in several weeks and in talking to senior romney advisor eric fehrnstrom, he said to me if this was a prize fight, they would have stopped the fight. that's how well they think mitt romney did. they're not going to be taking their foot off the gas pedal, i can tell you that the romney campaign came to the back of the plane just as it was landing here in virginia earlier this afternoon. they were starting to sense that the story, the narrative was starting to change from sort of a post-debate high for mitt romney to this new counter-offensive from the president going after some of the statements that mitt r
-- supporting women -- are much more popular than mitt romney's policies. i think that the obama team is going to double down on that over the next few weeks. >> brett, your reaction to that? >> well, you know, on wednesday night, those policies didn't look so good. a debate's about a competition of ideas, especially a political debate. so the president's got to be able to defend those policies if they truly are superior, and on wednesday night he didn't do a very good job of doing that. >> columnist david brooks and peggy noonan praised romney's performance after its missteps in recent weeks. brooks writing this. romney finally emerged from the fog and at long last began the process of offering a more authentic version of himself. noonan wrote this, america got its first sustained look at the good and competent mr. romney. how much do you think does the public support of leading conservaves like the two of them help romney, not just with republicans but with undecided voters? >> i think it helped some, but the person who helped governor romney most was governor romney. on wednesday night, he
will highlight high profile surrogate this is week. >> this is a pivotal election. >> former president clinton teams up with mr. obama at a fundraiser tonight in california. two days later clinton campaigns for the president in another battleground, nevada. >> mitt is up to the task. he is prepared. >> romney's wife, ann, goes in front of cameras wednesday morning when she's a special co-host on abc's "good morning america," but the highlight of the week is the vice president presidential debate. >> i hope it's a good debate. >> it's one of the things i like about this job. >> both running mates have prepared for thr only showdown that will take place high pressures in danville, kentucky. >> i'm looking forward to it. i really am. the thing about congressman ryan is he has been straight forward up until now about everything -- all the significant changes he wants to make. we have a fundamental different view on a whole range of issues. >> i've been studying. i'm reading joe biden's speeches. watching joe biden tape and studying on all the various issues. >> thanks to romney's strong performanc
that this was a preplanned attack and yet the obama administration, the white house, the president, all of the individuals involved, spent the course of the next week or so denying that. what's going on here? is this incompetence? is it confusion, or, is it a deliberate, intentional cover-up? >> i think it is deliberate to downplay the threats because clearly the narrative that the obama campaign has been trying to push that usama bin laden is dead and al qaeda is crushed and we know that is not true. like a balloon, if you crush the balloon and just looking at the front of it looks like al qaeda may be dead but you missed the fact that it is popping out in all these other areas. gregg: what white house press secretary jay carney and u.n. ambassador susan rice were telling the american people, not to mention the folks on capitol hill, was simply untrue. they were doing that for more than a week as we mentioned. now the latest offering up an explanation is general james clapper, the director of national intelligence. and here's his explanation and or excuse depending upon your point of view. we'll put it o
, every week they've had dozens of staff on the ground in new hampshire for obama for months and months, got a real head start on canvassing, phone calling and motivating that democratic base that had been sagging a year ago. that is almost up to the same level of intensity of republican support for mitt romney and that's what makes this race so close and i think it will stay close all the way to november 6th. gregg: kevin, great to see you, thanks so much for your incites. jenna: you talk about the ground game and voter turn out, what about absentee ballots, what about legislate the troops vote while serving overseas. we'll tell you next what the pentagon is doing to increase voter participation by our military men and women, that is ahead. plus a rare spider. looks creepy. gregg: albino spied jeer that spider was discovered a long a highway and because it was discovered construction on a highway project worth millions of dollars was stopped. we'll tell you why next. on the campaign trail for a couple of weeks, heually gave mt romney aop to compassia individuals on the campaign trail suffering because of the obama economy as he said that would do better under his tax plans and by not lit galling he will have a less of a chance of making that point because mitt romney seemed pretty compassionate last night. >> okay. so malpractice you see. john avlon had a jaw dropping moment. let's watch the moment and then we'ltalk. >> well, i don't have a $5 trillion tax cut. i don't have a tax cut of the scale you're talking about. my view is that we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class but i won't redees the share of taxes paid by high income people. >> jaw dropping because -- >> i mean, just surreal. the size of the etch-a-sketch. the audacity on taxes. which was unbelievable. i mean, almost as if mitt romney's not listening to the campaign rhetoric for five years. the core difnc candidates is about the tax cuts for the upper income bracket and 20% tax cut across the board. mitt romney never specified the deductions that he discusses and doesn't giv
not enough photo i.d.s could be issued in the last few weeks before the election, so he didn't want it it to happen in that time frame. supporters say it shows a double standard. >> obama had a rally and you had to have a photo i.d. to go to his rally. if it's good enough for his rally, why is it not good enough for voting? >> martha: interesting point. the voter i.d. law will go into effect, they say, but not until next year. >>> could there be trouble in par are dice for president obama and his one-time buddy, ben affleck. he had high hopes for president obama in 2008. but now affleck admits his feeling for the president are complicated. the actor blamed the president's record for his change of heart. >> brian: he wants him to be more liberal. so does matt damon. that's why he's disappointed. there you go. 12 minutes after the hour. next up, a u.s. border patrol agent shot and killed in the line of duty. so is the federal government failing to give our agents proper protection? we'll report. you decide. >> steve: and did you know having the government in your home for dinner? why
